Last month we told you about The Art of Watches, a rare opportunity for Patek Philippe collectors and enthusiasts to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes peek at the inner workings of the renowned watchmakers. Over the course of 11 days, the Grand Exhibition welcomed 2400 visitors a day, with lines that stretched around the block. We saw watch collectors of all ages, including several very excited children who were amazed by what they saw.
We have returned from New York City with an even greater appreciation for Patek timepieces — and for NYC! The exhibit was held in Cipriani, a luxe venue inspired by the Italian Renaissance and elaborately divided into ten rooms. Each held a bit of Patek Philippe history, with the first room beginning the journey with a short film on the origins of the company.
Another room held artists displayed jewel-setting and engraving, while across the hall was a vast display of Patek’s current collection of timepieces. On the second level of Cipriani, we spoke with master watchmakers, who actually showed us how each mechanism of the timepieces works.
Patek also introduced nine limited edition timepieces created specifically to commemorate this event. Highlights of this collection include the World Time Minute Repeater, the first Patek Philippe timepiece that includes both a minute repeater and the World Time function. Also released were 17 rare handcraft pieces such as dome table clocks, pocket watches, and wristwatches that give a nod to both New York City and the watchmaker’s history in the United States.
We were also lucky enough to hear from Patek Philippe President Thierry Stern: “From its earliest days, when our founder Antoine Norbert de Patek made his first journey to America in the 1850’s until today, the importance of America to Patek Philippe can be seen through our history exhibited in the Grand Exhibition in New York.” This was, he explained, the motivation behind bringing the Exhibition to the US and creating special timepieces that reflect how important the tie is between the Big Apple and the Swiss watchmaker.
Learning more about the long and prestigious history of Patek Philippe watches means we can better help you choose a timepiece that will be cherished by generations. Visit us in store at our Winston-Salem and Charlotte, NC locations so we can share everything we’ve learned with you!
