Has it been a while since you had your jewelry appraised? Did you recently inherit some jewelry and have no idea what it’s worth? The fluctuating prices of gold, precious metals, gemstones and diamonds may have substantially affected the value of your jewelry, which is exactly why you need a current jewelry appraisal!
You may think that the receipt for your purchase is sufficient enough to file an insurance claim, but unfortunately this isn’t the case. Many insurance carriers recommend having an appraisal done every three to five years to ensure adequate coverage in the event of a loss. An expert appraisal will include a detailed description of your piece including the type of metal that it’s set in; the size, color, cut, clarity and carat weight of the main stone; any information about the side stones (if applicable), and most importantly, the piece’s value. Since jewelry insurance premiums are based on the jewelry’s value, it’s really important to have it correctly and currently valued. If you’re going to make the choice to invest time and money into insurance for your jewelry, make sure it’s for the right amount by getting a quality appraisal. After receiving your appraisal, be sure to review your homeowners or renters policy to determine that your coverage limits are enough to adequately insure the value of your jewelry.
